Hong Kong leave for Japan in 2027: days off and holiday overlaps
Start with the annual leave you would actually need in Hong Kong, then compare Japan's holiday calendar. These examples use both governments' published 2027 dates. The counts describe time off under a stated work schedule; they do not forecast crowds, hotel prices or blossom dates.
When is Golden Week in Japan in 2027?
Within 29 April–5 May, Japan's national holidays fall on , , , . April 30 is not a national holiday; May 1–2 is the weekend. The whole seven-day window is not automatically a break for everyone. The May 6 substitute holiday from 2026 does not carry over to 2027.

Check whether this work schedule applies to you
Every example assumes you work Monday–Friday, have Saturdays and Sundays off, and receive all Hong Kong general holidays listed by GovHK. Each remaining weekday requires one full day of annual leave. If you work shifts, a six-day week or follow a different holiday calendar, use your own roster to recalculate. This guide uses general holidays, not the statutory holiday list; it does not say that every employee receives all these days off.
Total days off include the first and last dates. You need annual leave for each weekday that is not a Hong Kong general holiday. Saturday holidays count once; no extra day off is added unless it appears in the official calendar. Japanese holidays do not reduce the leave you need in Hong Kong.

How to choose between these windows
Easter through Ching Ming: 4 leave days for 11 days off
Take 30–31 March and 1–2 April off to cover 26 March through 5 April. Japan's Vernal Equinox Day and substitute holiday fall on 21–22 March, before this window, so there is no Japanese national holiday inside it. For blossom planning, use the 2027 cherry blossom forecast and hotel guide; check the blossom forecast separately from your leave dates.
National Day through Chung Yeung: 4 leave days for 10 days off
Both 1 and 8 October fall on Friday. Taking 4–7 October off connects them with two weekends. Japan's Sports Day is on 11 October: extending your return from 10 to 11 October costs one more Hong Kong leave day and brings one Japanese holiday into the trip. If you plan to stay that extra day, check local events and accommodation for the Japanese holiday too.
Golden Week: 7 days away require 5 days of Hong Kong leave
The 7 days from 29 April to 5 May contain 4 Japanese national holidays. Hong Kong has only Labour Day in this window, on Saturday 1 May, so you need 5 annual leave days under this work schedule. By comparison, 13–16 May around Buddha's Birthday offers four days off using one leave day and contains no Japanese national holiday. Compare the leave you need first, then check flights and accommodation for both dates.
Mid-Autumn and Christmas: short or longer trips
The short 16–19 September window ends before Japan's Respect for the Aged Day on 20 September. Extending to 26 September brings both 20 and 23 September into the trip. The Cabinet Office does not list 21 or 22 September as 2027 holidays, so do not reuse the 2026 September break. The longest Christmas example stops at 31 December; check 2028 dates separately before extending its day count.
Before turning days off into a trip
- Families: check school calendars and each caregiver's work schedule before choosing travel dates.
- Budget travelers: choose two sets of dates that need similar amounts of leave, then compare flights, room types and cancellation terms.
- First visits and heavy luggage: settle workable departure and return dates before adding cities and hotels. Allow time for the journeys at both ends of the trip.

We checked each date in GovHK's Chinese and English 2027 calendars, and separately checked Japan's Cabinet Office calendar for 2027. We then counted weekdays, total days off and required leave dates using the work schedule above. This is a check of official web sources; no employer-specific days off have been added.
Confidence: high for official holiday dates and arithmetic under the stated assumptions. Actual crowds, prices and 2027 event schedules are outside this assessment.

Limitations
- Leave counts apply only to the stated workweek and Hong Kong general-holiday arrangement. Confirm leave approval, school holidays and employer-specific substitute days separately.
- The Japan column flags local holidays. It cannot tell you how busy a destination will be or what hotels will cost.
- A day without a national holiday may still be busy, and attractions may be closed. Local events, school breaks and individual employer holidays are not included.
- Coverage ends on 31 December 2027. New Year 2028, extensions across the year boundary and time gained or lost through overnight flights are not included.
- The month guides and comfort calculator currently use 2026 data. Their scores must not be treated as 2027 results. Recheck the official calendars before paying or requesting leave.
